Enchanted Forest & Garden
Lake Omen

The Enchanted Forest & Garden is the first glimpse of Visium that characters see. Sounds of all sorts of mythical creatures can be heard, but oddly never seen, besides the faeries that fly and flutter around the garden. Flowers seem a lot more beautiful and enticing in this garden and characters will have the urge to leave the garden even though it is extremely peaceful. Different flowers bloom throughout the year and each one has a different effect on outsiders. Characters may visit the Enchanted Garden at any time once they are settled in Somnius. It's a good place to relax and do your yoga stretches... or try to summon a demon. Whatever your character wants to do.

As characters leave the garden as the premise instructs, they will see to their right a lake called Lake Omen. There's nothing special about this lake other than it seems like a very beautiful lake. Stay around the lake too long, however, and characters may catch glimpses of mythical creatures such as mermaids and sirens, implying there is some connection to the sea. There are fish in this lake that can be fished and eaten should characters want to try to do something like that.

The Labyrinth
Castle Vaeros

As far as the eye can see, characters will notice the village is surrounded by walls with an exit leading into The Labyrinth. The Labyrinth seems like an endless maze, and perched up on the highest point, always there and always watching, is Castle Vaeros. Characters are free to investigate the Labyrinth at their own risk, as exploring the Labyrinth can be treacherous, with many traps. Mentally, being stuck in the Labyrinth can drive people to insanity and characters who spend more than 3 days in the Labyrinth will eventually pass out and wake up in the garden again. Players may request their findings here if their character explores the Labyrinthm either for hiatus or just for shits and giggles. Too much adventuring in the Labyrinth may have physical consequences, so be careful! Keep in mind the walls of the Labyrinth are indestrucible, and characters who can fly will be unable to use their flight over the Labyrinth.

Castle Vaeros is where the Overseer lives. It seems a lot further away than it appears. The castle seems a bit... large and extra for what seems to be one singular person living there, but there's always a sense of activity there... almost as if the castle itself was alive. There is no way to reach this castle, as the Labyrinth is the only entrance and flying there is impossible. You'll just have to wait until the Overseer decides to visit Somnius himself... but that could be awhile.

Crystal
White Windmill
Starlight Cliff

The Crystal is a massive, purple... well... crystal. It is set up in an area that looks like a sacred place of worship, surrounded by pillars and torches that are always aflame. It's always emitting a faint glow, and characters can approach the crystal and press their pendant against it to make a wish once they want to use their shards. Instantly, the wish will be granted (upon mod approval) and the item or power enhancement will appear right before the character's eyes. There are various seating places around the Crystal and optional fire pits should someone want to stay awhile. Those who are sensitive to power may feel it coming from the Crystal. Otherwise, it seems to do nothing else than maybe be beneficial to a character's skin or give them immense peace.

The White Windmill is also located here. There isn't much to say about this other than characters may explore to the highest part of this windmill for a change of scenery. The Windmill itself looks abandoned and seems to be operating on pure magic (or spite, who knows) alone.

Starlight Cliff is a mountain that characters may explore and climb if they desire. Again, characters that can fly will notice their ability to fly is disabled, but they can still travel through the dense forest along a pathway that leads to the top. Try traveling during night time when the pathway is bioluminescent and all the exotic flora lights up (think Avatar kind of shit.) Unlike some other parts of the city, there is nothing but silence and no creatures to be found. Only the sounds of running water from streams that decorate the mountain.

Housing

Located around all of the businesses in a circle are the different housing options. Characters can pick whichever housing they want upon their arrival. Each house will be furnished with all essential items that someone living in a fantasy world would need. A coal oven, handmade furniture, outhouse, beds, manual bathtub, etc. Characters can wish for upgrades to their housing if they want modern technology such as a running water system, television, microwave, espresso machine, etc. These items can be obtained on the Rewards page. Otherwise, enjoy standard living... Dungeons & Dragons style.

To view the Housing options, visit this page.

Businesses

There are a collection of Businesses that are manned by mythical creatures. Characters may also choose to work at any of these businesses they desire. Feel free to go wild with the shops and businesses as you see fit and whatever job you think your character may want to do in exchange for shards. We will handwave the shards and they won't count as rewards, but it's a little something characters ICly can receive for payment.

The Raven's Quill: A library. You won't find any answers to this mythical world here unless it's on magical bestiary. This shop contains books from every single universe, whether it be your universe or your friend's universe. Nobody works here (yet) so enjoy how unorganized and out of sorts the library is. You wanted to find a book that starts with "C"? It's probably over there in the "H" section.

Update: This library is now staffed exclusively by characters from other worlds, and they have come together to negotiate for decent wages for all librarians. They have set up a few basic rules: All books are to be returned in 2 weeks or a penalty will be incurred. No food or drinks inside the library. All guests are to stay as quiet as possible. No hanky-panky or any such business within the library. The organization of the books still remains chaotic, however, with some books being organized in accordance to the equivalent of a Dewey Decimal system by topic, and some books being sorted together regardless of fiction or nonfiction. They still have ways to go.

Stone Dragon: A coffee shop and bakery. This store has early hours of 7 AM - 4 PM and brews delicious coffee that complements their breads and pastries. Most of the workers here seem to be a happier bunch, unlike the restaurant across the street, which is...

The Cask & Anvil: A tavern and restaurant that is also open 24/7. Have a pint or some delicious (even if it's questionable looking) food from our disgruntled and unhappy staff. This place isn't terribly active because the service sucks, but if you're wanting alcohol and food, this is the place to go. Underage characters won't always be questioned if they want alcohol; it really depends which bartender they talk to.

The Marketplace: It stretches all the way through the middle of Somnius. Outdoor shops and vendors that can provide food and clothing in exchange for shards. It's open 24/7, so anytime you need anything, the Marketplace will always be there.

Wanderlust Armory & Blacksmith: The goblin blacksmith Lucan is a man of few words, but he'll provide armor and weaponry for the right price... an unfair price. He knows the value of his work, and being the only blacksmith around? It isn’t like he’s got any competition. Try your haggling techniques with him, but more than likely you will get ripped off. Characters may choose to apprentice under him or serve as a junior blacksmith but it won’t be a very enjoyable time. He is known for giving very little instruction then scrutinizing the finished work. He’s quite stingy with the wages too!

Wellspring: A public bath house. This is the place to receive the best kind of bathing with hot water that is beneficial to hair and skin. The bath house is separated by gender with a lounge area in the center for anyone to congregate with one another in robes which are provided for them. Bathing here costs a small amount of shards, but it's worth it if characters don't have modern water and bathing items at their house.

The Littlest Post Office: Run by Sir Matthew Mousefield, The Littlest Post Office is the city’s only functioning post office, and it stands at about the height of the average person’s knee. This is the main headquarters of the mailmice, and where their mail gets sorted, organized and sent away. How do big packages fit into this tiny establishment? Townsfolk drop their mail off into their mailbox or one of the mailboxes around the town, and the mice have an enchantment in their paws and can shrink packages and letters down to a size they are able to carry! To prevent abuse of this spell, it only works on postage items.

The mice travel through burrows along the city collecting this mail, sorting it, and delivering it to its intended recipient (by putting it into their mailbox or coming out of a mousehole in their home). Characters who work as postal workers can enter the post office through a special enchantment that makes them shrink (only usable in the post office). They will be given a satchel, a snazzy hat and cheese as a snack. Everyone else can only peer in curiosity at the tiny workers until they are chased out. You can find more information on the mailmice in the creatures page.

The Church of the Moon: Near the large crystal there is an old church dedicated to the worship of the moon. The church is decorated with frescoes depicting the different stages of the moon, one of those stages being the blood moon red and full. Some frescoes depict an artist's interpretation of the moon as a beautiful goddess with flowing locks of hair and a kind expression. The church has both a funeral grounds around it and catacombs below it to house the dead from the village.

In front of the church sits the stone statue of a white liger with feathered wings. This is Brostelo. Ever since the blood moon, he’s awoken from his stone slumber to assist the town with his knowledge of medicine (you can find more information about him on the creatures page). With his guidance, the church has become a place of refuge and medical treatment for the people in the town. Healers are encouraged to gather here and provide treatment to the injured and sick. This is an informal, not-for-profit arrangement (they will not be compensated) and there is currently no formal clinic in the town.

Clotilda's Tailors and Wares: Clotilda is the most stylish goblin in town, and she knows her way around a thread, needle and spinning wheel. It is rumored that she makes clothing for Lord Vaeros himself! In her humble store, you’ll be able to find all sorts of clothing in all shapes and sizes. Whether you’re a man, woman, human, goblin or faerie, she’ll probably have something for you! Clotilda is obsessed with styling others and often hounds patrons who walk in, sizing them up and trying to style them. Clothes available are typical for the setting - so this means tunics, corsets, stockings, aprons, bodices and long gowns. Characters can work here as tailors, designers, or salespersons. When hit with inspiration, she often pulls in her employees and uses them to model her newest dress or tunic.

Built by Otto: A carpentry, woodworking and furniture store run by a merry band of 7 gnome brothers. These gnomes are highly efficient, able to turn a pile of logs into a well-crafted table in a manner of hours. They deal with all things wood - whether it’s crafting furniture, building homes, making repairs or carving little wooden toys. Most of the treehouses and the wooden interiors of the hill houses were built by these guys, so the town owes them a lot. They are happy to hire characters as apprentices or carpenters (if they have the skills), but with how efficient they are and how grumpy they can get if the work is slow, shifts can be stressful. These gnomes buy wood from the local woodcutters and pay a decent amount for good quality logs.

Clay Oven: A pottery and clay workshop that makes housewares (cups, plates, teapots, vases, pots) and ornaments (clay sculptures, dolls and toys). This shop is best known for its whimsical tea sets, with the biggest hit being the Frog Cups. This shop is run by Matilda, Clotilda’s quiet and reserved sister. She takes on apprentices readily and is very patient in teaching them how to use the pottery wheel. There seems to be some bad blood between both sisters, so it’s best not to mention Clotilda while Matilda is within earshot.

Be warned, anyone who attempts any funny business on the pottery wheel will be promptly asked to leave. No, seriously. She is tired. Do not get funny on the pottery wheel.

Muddy Pumpkin Farms: Most of the town gets its milk, meat and vegetables from the Muddy Pumpkin Farms, which sits in the open land near to the Starlight Cliffs. This large farm spans many acres and houses different kinds of livestock (cows, chicken, sheep). Seasonal crops are also being grown and harvested on these lands. Hard-working characters can choose to work as a farm hand, where they will be in charge of minding the crops and animals.

Salt Lady: There are several fishing boats docked along the lake. Among them, the Salt Lady typically has the largest catches of the year, but the goblin captain Hallog is an interesting character. They say he had some questionable involvement with a mermaid in the past, and it’s given him a way with the sealife, allowing him to sense exactly where the large schools of fishes are gathered. That’s all fine and dandy, but every time he so much as hears the mermaid’s song, he’s ready to climb overboard and drown himself inside the lake. His crew stops him, of course. Over and over. It’s a system that works, they swear.

Characters can choose to join his long suffering crew, or they can help out on any of the other fishing boats around. They’ll be paid by the day and always come home with fish to eat. If they ask the boat captains to attempt sailing the ocean and leaving Somnius, however, they’ll get confused looks. These people don’t even seem to know what an ocean is…

School

There is only one school in Somnius, and it’s a large campus situated near the Labyrinth’s entrance. Led by the gelfling headmaster Castellan, the Academy of All Sorts offers exactly that— anything that might be worth teaching, be it basic subjects (math, sciences, language and art), important life skills (home economics) or trades. This academy accepts students of all ages and students may pick and choose their classes. Classrooms look like this. There is food within the cafeteria but it is unremarkable and serves the fantasy equivalent of what you would expect a school cafeteria to serve.

Examples of classes include:

  • Trade-related classes such as carpentry, metalwork, dressmaking and pottery. All apprentices working at the different businesses in Somnius will be requested to take up classes to train up their skills.
  • Gardening and horticulture classes.
  • Home economics classes such as basic to intermediate and advanced cookery.
  • Music classes, including singing, dancing and playing musical instruments.
  • Art classes such as portrait-painting and sculpting.
  • Classes in usage of healing.
  • Basic academic subjects such as mathematics, language, alchemy and history. Characters who attend history classes will notice that most of the content is singing praises of the Overseer, and none of it is very valuable at all if they want to learn about the history of the land. Alchemy is similar to chemistry, but the content would be archaic to some.

Characters interested in teaching can get a position in the school and run their own classes. Comment in the top level here to sign up as a teacher. Please note that it has to be reasonable for your character to be teaching this subject. If it’s clear they do not know what they are talking about, students will stop showing up to their classes and they will be asked to stop.

NPC teachers come in all shapes and species and are knowledgeable in what they teach but not very talkative outside of classes.

Inferna

Off the map and in the center of Visium is a place of damnation called Inferna. Characters who die in the game will be sent to this place for a minimum of three days, or however long the player decides, which is an option should the player go on hiatus... or if you just want to be absolutely terrible to your character at any given time.

Inferna is a place of torment, both physical and psychological. What happens there is completely up to the player. Do you want your character to relive the most horrible thing that has ever happened to them over and over? Go for it. Have them die over and over again by any way possible? Sure. Maybe you want something more mild, like have them tied to a chair with something horrible playing on a television screen. Whatever the case, it's completely up to the player as to what happens there and how long their character is there for. Whatever happens, it must have an effect on the character where they do NOT want to die again. Characters will respawn in the Enchanted Garden whenever the player sees fit and will return to Somnius with psychological damage and/or physical damage if the player would like to injure or impair them.

Misc.

Indigo Sand Grove

The Indigo Sand Grove. As the name implies, the sand here isn't white or.. well.. sandy colored, but instead a beautiful dark blue with the occasional glitter grains. It almost appears black if the scorching sun isn't hitting it just right. Any other foliage or trees seen here will be typical of Earthly tropical beaches with the occasional unidentifiable vegetation. All in all, Indigo Sand Grove and its beaches seem welcoming and not harmful at all. In fact, there are bamboo garden chairs sitting out, enticing people to have a beach party and sun bathe! The sea is safe to swim in, filled with typical fish that would come from Earth and crystal clear waters.

clarification on submission process

[personal profile] wintolive 2024-05-14 12:50 am (UTC)(link)
Hi mods! I am wondering if business submissions have to be officially approved before one can start assuming the business is functional, or if we can go ahead and start playing with it beforehand, similar to certain crystal rewards? I am just not clear on how this particular process works, so any clarification is appreciated! Thanks, mods! <3

Character Name: Red Son
Character Business: Flame and Claw Blacksmith The new artisanal screw-the-price-gouging-NPC store
Services: Flame and Claw can make anything made out of metal and glass that is to be expected of a the medievalesque forge set up. Weapons, armor, tools, dishware, crafting supplies, the various odds and ends of metal and glass things that can be part of life.

More complicated metal and glass things, like he could conceivably put together a car, but such things take a lot longer depending on size and how precise pieces need to be fitted together. It is within Red Son's skillset, and skills he will teach his apprentices over time, but everything takes a lot longer to make by hand versus a machine. Such things would come down to special requests.

Specialty items on offer are transformation weapons, think in the vein of RWBY, if generally more simple transformations. Make a sword turn into a spear or a dagger or into a shotgun.

Which is the second specialty weapon of guns. Nothing like an assault rifle, think generally guns that aren't automatic. One trigger pull fires one bullet. Pistols, rifles, and shotguns are all doable options. Guns are only offered to Dreamers and isn't advertised anywhere that Townsfolk are supposed to see, generally kept to the network or word of mouth, and had a vetting process.

The prices are also kept fair for the quality of work. There is no needless overcharging at the Flame and Claw.

There is also a ~*~Newbie Special!~*~ where new arrivals can get a basic kitchen set and one basic weapon for free.

Character Name: Erwin Smith and Levi Ackerman
Character Business: Kuchel's Tea Shop
Services: You know those super bougie, ridiculous tea shops you can find in wealthier neighbourhoods, the ones that are trying way too hard to out-Starbucks Starbucks? This isn't like that. It's not like a Starbucks either. It's a simple, homey tea shop with enormous windows that let in lots of natural light, and big flowering plants out front.

Inside, the back wall is a tall shelf of various tea and coffee tins, with a wooden counter in front of them. To one side of the counter, there's a glass display cabinet, the kind that holds sandwiches and pastries. On the main floor, there are some tables scattered about the main floor, surrounded by a variety of chairs. Some are plush and cozy, others are wooden and more spartan. A bookshelf in one corner has a ragtag collection of books and board games on it. Everything has a lived in, well loved look to it, but it's been kept scrupulously neat and clean.

There are two chalkboards propped on the wooden counter. One reads, simply, "Levi's Recommendations" and has a list of teas and tea blends on it. The other is called "Erwin's Abominations" and has a list of... creative coffee drinks. Starbucks wishes it could get on this level.
